Post Mortem Follow-Up Study

Monitoring Report

This study is a follow-up to the joint OSM and PADEP Post-Post Mortem Study. The Post Mortem Study was a study of permits with pollutional discharges to determine the cause of the discharge. Last year’s drought conditions resulted in observation of several dry discharges. The purpose of this study was to revisit those dry sites during more normal weather conditions to determine if the discharges have abated or have reoccurred.

Inspections were conducted on seven of the previously dry discharges. Each of the discharges inspected remained dry (no flow). In order to allow additional time for ground water levels to recover from 1999’s drought, completion of the study has been delayed until spring of 2001. During this upcoming inspection cycle each of the dry discharges will be revisited and data gathered from any site where flows have recovered. The further reviews of these sites will be conducted as part of the passive treatment site study that is being developed for the year 2001 oversight workplan.

Overall findings from this study are that permits issued since 1990 have demonstrated a significantly smaller rate of production of post-mining AMD. A dramatic drop in the severity and volume of AMD has been identified throughout the term of this oversight review.
